Afraid of being outed, Neil Hunter, "Hunt," dreads meeting the new "human lie detector" at the precinct — a registered empath who can sense truth and falsehood.

But Skyler Zane is more of a mess than any closeted cop could ever be, with an abusive ex and a history of mental issues. And instead of avoiding him, Hunt ends up taking him under his wing, looking out for him.

And maybe falling for him, too. Everything is going well — including their unexpected feelings for each other — until Sky's skills come to the wrong attention. Now it's up to Hunt to find him — and figure out how to keep them both alive.

SAFE Men of the ESRB Book 1 edition by Hollis Shiloh Romance eBooks

This is a first person entertaining story that's written in typical Hollish Shiloh style: emphasis on thr story and characters with low sexual content. Hence, if you're looking for a lot of graphic sex, this isn't the book for you. If, however, you're looking for a great story about two very lovable men who form an unbreakable bond, then you've come to the right place. Hunt is just your aveage patrolman cop trying to do his part to help and Skylar is a man who's been through so much trauma and struggles in his life that average is what he needs. They meet and it takes some time for them to get together, but when they do, it's beautiful. Skylar, having finally found the peace and safety he needs from Hunt, can now begin to grow and develop into the empath he was always meant to be. There are some cliches like homphobic cops, a gruff captain and a corrupt cop, but Skylar has Hunt and a whole organization that wants nothing but the best for him and will do everything in thier power to get it for me. Safe is a well-written, engaging story that goes by quickly that focuses on love and finally finding the place that puts you on the right track to your future. I can also see this being a great set-up for a series as I'd love to learn more about the agents at the Extra Sensory Regulation Board.

SAFE Men of the ESRB Book 1 edition by Hollis Shiloh Romance eBooks Reviews

SAFE involves a young man, an empath named Skyler, a new employee at the police station. While the officers there desperately need and want Skyler to assist them, they know having him is a tough sale. It's not just Skyler's skills as a human lie detector that come into play. There are those cops that don't want a gay man in their station. Then there's Skyler's personal issues, caused by a damaged past. Because he is a valued asset yet does have emotional issues, the chief assigns one of his cops to 'babysit' him.

So Hunt becomes Skyler's minder, body guard, friend, and chauffeur -- A full time job. The story is well told from Hunt's point of view. The partnership goes from strangers to acquaintances, co-workers to friends, and on trusted confidant. The love interest is there, the characters engaging, and the outcome, while predictable, is expected. It was an interesting and relaxing read.

Like another reviewer stated, this story sounds like the start of a series. The agency that employs Skyler is briefly touched on and interesting enough to see another book. And Skyler is 'transforming'. His talent and relationship with Hunt is just beginning to take off. It'd be great to see the next step and a deeper look at the agency in a continuing book. - Dan's Wife
I'm sure that I've said this before, but this is easily one of Shiloh's best. The 2 MCs are not perfect by far, but as they grow into one another, they become perfect for each other. Honestly, the 2 of them, in the beginning reminded me of the MCs from her book "Joey & The Fox", but the plot line is vastly different. Skyler is very sweet, but very much damaged emotionally; he wants to be liked and/or loved, but what do you do when everyone prejudges you, AND you can tell exactly how they really feel about you even when they put on a front? I thought Hunt was a good cop and a good man, but he expressed a lot of self-doubt. Honestly, judging by his Captain's attitude & behavior, maybe he just hadn't had the right environment, training and support. Captain Quill was a selfish, self-serving b**tard who I did not like once he showed his true colors. Actually, the majority of the characters were a bunch of jerks. I hated how long it took for everyone to take appropriate action because they thought Sky was a freak rather tan appreciating him or didn't believe in Hunt.

Another thing I thought was interesting was how there was not 1 bad guy storyline, but there's a bit of a twist in the middle with additional bad guys. That ramped things up a notch. I'm glad that most everything was explained by the end (except detailed punishment for the bad guys) and there was a definite HEA that made me happy.
A first from this author. A good, interesting read that kept me turning the pages (or tapping the corner of the , anyway). Will be reading more of her books!
For being a suspense book, this suuuure was boring. In fact, this could probably have been split into two books and some of the events in the story expanded, because they really felt rushed. I'm not going to give any spoilers, but really big events were just treated like--meh. Let's just get this done and go on. Also, I don't care if there's a lot of sex in my m/m stories, but I at least want some--even just one lovemaking session would have been nice. I certainly didn't care enough to buy any more.
I'm taking one star away for the overall feeling that these characters are recycled from "Joey & The Fox" from her other series just replace shifters with psychics then match an overly fragile sensitive talented dude with a hard bitten muscle bro enforcer type guy and viola. BUT... I liked that particular book from her Shifters & Partners series and I really do not have a problem with an author revisiting their stronger stories and tweaking them and trying to perfect their craft it's all part of the deal in my opinion.

Then I read the next book in this series "Keep" and *nope nope nope* I think I will just stop with this first book that I did enjoy and let you guys go on and read the rest of whatever this series becomes because I was not at all happy with reading yet another unfocused and overly complicated slog of not very well thought out "gay romance" that was not all that "gay" or "romantic". I just think Hollis Shiloh's strength may be to stay with more simple story telling because I read all 7 Shifters & Partners books and I hate to say it but really only 2 of them stood out as any good the rest were either out right painful unedited unfocused writing or meh "Kinda ok, maybe, but what was the point of the book?" and this series looks like it is headed in that same inconsistent direction.
